Where’s Santa? OnStar Follows His Trip from the North Pole

Kids can monitor Santa’s progress via OnStar technology

DETROIT– OnStar will help preserve the magic of this holiday season by enabling children everywhere to learn Santa’s whereabouts on Christmas Eve with a simple press of the OnStar button, thanks to its collaboration with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) “Track Santa” program.

From 7:00 a.m. on Dec. 24 until 5:00 a.m. on Dec. 25, anyone with an active OnStar subscription can press the blue OnStar button in his or her vehicle to request a “Santa Update” and find out Santa’s current location.

“Each year, technology plays an increasingly important role in connecting friends and families, especially during the holidays,” said Neelie O’Conner, director of OnStar subscriber services. “For the fourth consecutive year, OnStar will be a part of this tradition, helping our customers connect with Santa during this special season.”

Using sophisticated systems like the North Warning Radar System and geo-synchronous satellites with infrared sensors, NORAD monitors Santa’s location on Christmas Eve. Children may also follow Santa with the NORAD Track Santa mobile apps.

With Leading Fuel Economy, All-New Ford Transit Changes Game in Full-Size Commercial Vans

  • All-new Transit joins the nation’s best-selling lineup of commercial vehicles, giving Ford customers best-in-class fuel economy, the segment’s lowest cost of ownership, increased capability and Built Ford Tough durability
  • Ford Transit offers the broadest lineup of configurations for full-size van customers, available in more variations than the competition combined – three body lengths, two wheelbases, three roof heights and in van, wagon, chassis cab and cutaway variations
  • Ford Transit will achieve an average of 25 percent better fuel economy and haul at least 300 pounds more than today’s E-Series

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 14, 2012 – The familiar van that delivers packages or shuttles you to the airport is about to change in a revolutionary way. Ford’s all-new full-size 2014 Transit van will provide professional tradesmen and commercial fleet customers with unmatched fuel economy, innovative new configurations and leading versatility in the expanding commercial vehicle market.

“The all-new Transit is a game changer,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of The Americas. “Transit raises the game for our customers in North America and around the world with even greater work capability and significantly lower operating costs, helping improve their productivity and bottom lines. These, literally, are the vehicles people trust and rely on for their livelihoods.”

With global commercial vehicle sales expected to grow by 4.8 million during the next several years to 21 million units annually by 2017, Transit represents a major opportunity.

Ford is the second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the world and best-selling commercial vehicle brand in North America. The company is leveraging its One Ford product strategy to meet the needs of Transit customers on six continents and in 116 markets with vans that are Built Ford Tough, more fuel efficient and even more capable.

Transit joins the most fuel-efficient lineup in Ford Motor Company’s history. Next year, Ford will offer eight vehicles rated at 40 mpg or higher – double 2011’s total, and more than any other automaker. Ford tops Toyota in fuel economy in every segment in which both companies compete.

Transit is born from a combined total of nearly a century of hard-earned experience delivering two distinct full-size vans to customers in North America, Europe and other global markets. For North America, Transit eventually replaces the E-Series nameplate, first sold in 1961 as Ford Econoline and America’s best-selling commercial van for 33 years. In other global markets, this all-new vehicle will replace today’s popular, market-specific Transit models, first sold in 1965 and the best-selling commercial van in Europe.

Transit also is joined by the upgraded 2014 Ford Transit Connect, which pioneered the small van market in the U.S. starting three years ago and has been a hit with cost-conscious commercial fleets and small business proprietors.

Superior cargo hauling and people moving capabilities combined with best-in-class fuel economy were design imperatives for the all-new Transit range.
Transit will be offered in three body lengths; two wheelbases; three roof heights; van, wagon, chassis cab and cutaway bodystyles; and in XL and XLT trim levels.

Power of choice
“The Transit is the new standard in full-size vans and customer choice,” said Director of Ford Commercial Vehicle Operations Len Deluca. “We’re going from an exclusively gasoline engine lineup of two V8s and a V10 in the E-Series to offering customers a standard 3.7-liter V6, the same 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine proven in Ford F-150 and an all-new 3.2-liter Power Stroke® Diesel option.”

Ford will offer Transit’s 3.7-liter V6 with a compressed natural gas/liquid propane gas (CNG/LPG) prep kit to assist customers running their vehicles with this abundant, affordable, clean fuel alternative. The 3.7-liter V6 is also engineered for optimal performance with E85 flex- fuel capability.

The all-new 3.2-liter Power Stroke five-cylinder common rail turbo diesel, based on Ford’s proven Duratorq global diesel engine architecture, features state-of-the-art fuel, turbo and emissions systems that meet stringent U.S. clean diesel standards, providing an ideal balance of fuel economy and job capability.

For maximum capability, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost promises to be a trusted workhorse, whether carrying materials to the job site or towing a trailer with Transit’s available Class IV hitch.
Each engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for efficient rear-wheel-drive operation.

Biggest range ever
For Transit, the power of choice goes beyond powertrain options to encompass multiple lengths and three roof heights to provide full-size van buyers with the precise combination and configuration they require.

The high-roof Transit features 81.5 inches of interior cargo height, enough headroom for a person six feet, five inches tall to stand upright in the cargo area. The medium-roof can accommodate up to 72.0 inches of cargo height and the low-roof has almost 56.0 inches of cargo height to provide an ideal combination of payload management, upfit readiness and garageability.

Cargo volume ranges from about 250 to almost 500 cubic feet as a jumbo configuration – nearly 80 percent more space than the largest E-Series – and over twice the volume of today’s standard E-Series. Essentially, one jumbo van can haul the volume of two current models in a fuel-efficient manner.

Transit’s rear cargo doors can open up to 270 degrees for easy loading and unloading.
The Transit interior has been developed for easy upfit of racks, bins, shelving and other cargo storage and hauling solutions. The largest passenger version can carry up to 15 people.

A 6.5-inch touch screen display with navigation and SYNC® with MyFord Touch® – Ford’s highly acclaimed voice-activated communications and entertainment system – is also available.

Driving quality
The all-new Ford Transit was designed with improved handling, steering and ride qualities.
A power rack-and-pinion steering setup provides exceptionally communicative steering feel to the driver, serving as a confidence builder.

The front suspension consists of subframe-mounted MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar for smoother, flatter cornering, combined with progressive rear leaf springs and heavy-duty gas-charged dampers for well-controlled ride quality – regardless of load status.

Minimized operating costs
Transit’s global design delivers on the same customer expectations in 116 markets worldwide where this sturdy commercial vehicle will be available, requirements such as versatility, fuel efficiency and low operating costs.

Transit has been developed to be efficient to service and maintain, with specialized technical service support and extended operating hours available at more than 600 Ford Business Preferred Network dealers.

Designed and developed to provide efficient service over the long haul, Ford Transit scheduled maintenance costs for a three-year usage cycle are projected to be more than 30 percent less than a Chevrolet Express 1500 with the standard 4.3-liter V6, helping give Transit the segment’s lowest cost of ownership per cubic foot or pounds of cargo transported.

Built Ford Tough
The all-new Ford Transit has been engineered to deliver a severe-usage service life of 10 years and 150,000 miles. Transit features rugged unibody construction and extensive application of high-strength and boron steel that’s been tested to the same standards as E-Series vehicles at Ford’s proving grounds and in the hands of real-world fleet customers in North America.

A durability program to deliver on Built Ford Tough customer requirements included 148 prototype vehicles, with a regimen of 215 separate tests to validate the long-haul functionality of various vehicle systems and hardware.

Cumulatively, Transit durability test vehicles were driven more than 4.6 million miles, or far enough to circle the globe 185 times.

Transit van and wagon models will be available at Ford dealers starting next fall. They will be built at Ford’s recently upgraded Kansas City manufacturing facility.

Ford’s Fuel-Efficient, Powerful 3.5-Liter EcoBoost V6 Engine to Be Offered in Transit Commercial Van for North America

  • The all-new full-size rear-wheel-drive Transit van that starts production in North America in 2013 will be available with Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine, delivering an unbeatable combination of fuel economy and power
  • EcoBoost engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance
  • The next-generation Transit will live up to E-Series Built Ford Tough reputation plus achieve at least 25 percent better fuel economy, due in part to smart weight reductions of at least 300 pounds compared to similar E-Series vans
INDIANAPOLIS, March 5, 2012 – When Ford’s all-new Transit commercial van debuts in North America in 2013, it will come equipped with the company’s award-winning, fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine to better meet the needs of commercial truck customers.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine in the new rear-wheel-drive Transit will complement the van’s expected class-leading driving dynamics and technology, making it the perfect replacement for Ford’s venerable E-Series wagon and van in North America.
“The new Ford Transit commercial van will deliver all the capability and capacity that customers get with today’s E-Series, but with the bonus of improved fuel economy and potentially lower operating costs thanks to its available EcoBoost engine,” said Tim Stoehr, Ford Commercial Truck Marketing manager. “This engine has revolutionized the half-ton pickup segment for F-150 and we’re expecting it will have the same effect on commercial vans.”
The new Transit will go beyond living up to the Ford E-Series’ exceptional work reputation. The vehicle will achieve at least 25 percent better fuel economy compared to similar E-Series vans, due in part to smart weight savings that will trim at least 300 pounds from Transit compared to a similar E-Series van. That means customers could potentially save thousands of dollars in operating costs from fuel savings.
EcoBoost engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world. By 2013, Ford plans to produce up to 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally in a wide variety of vehicles from small cars to trucks.
EcoBoost engines feature:
  • A high-pressure direct-injection fuel system fed by a common rail that delivers a precise amount of gasoline in the exact spot for fast and complete burn
  • Turbocharging to create a denser mix of air and fuel in each cylinder
  • Special pistons with optimized bowls in the center to improve combustion efficiency. These pistons are also oil-cooled, which reduces in-cylinder temperatures
  • Reduced CO2 emissions and excellent fuel economy compared to V8 engines with similar power ratings
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 available in the Ford F-150 had a successful year in 2011, exceeding 100,000 sales in less than one year on the market. EcoBoost-equipped F-150s now account for more than 40 percent of F-150 retail sales.
Gasoline direct injection A key contributor to EcoBoost fuel efficiency is direct injection of gasoline. This system precisely delivers a fine mist of fuel directly into each cylinder for optimal performance, economy and emissions. Unlike port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines that spray fuel in the intake system before it enters the combustion chamber, the direct-injection system puts the fuel exactly where it needs to be in the cylinder for optimal combustion.
A high-pressure injector is positioned to the side of each cylinder, aiming the fuel directly into the cylinder adjacent to a high-intensity spark plug and alongside the intake and exhaust valves. Fuel is sprayed into the cylinders at pressures of up to 2,150 pounds per square inch, which is about 35 times more intense than PFI injection.
Cargo and people hauler
The current-generation Transit van is the best-selling van in Europe. Ford has sold more than 6 million Transits across five continents since its original launch in 1965. The Transit is currently offered to global customers in a variety of cargo, passenger and chassis cab configurations with a choice of efficient diesel engines. In 2010, the 6-millionth Transit rolled off the production line in Turkey. Conceived as Ford’s first pan-European product in the mid-1960s, the next generation Transit will become a global asset with the availability of the full-size rear-wheel versions in the US.

To get ready for production in the U.S. by 2013, Ford is investing $1.1 billion in its Kansas City Assembly Plant, where the Transit will be built alongside the F-150.

Advanced, Fuel-Efficient 3.2-Liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel Makes North American Debut in All-New 2014 Ford Transit

  • Already a proven global workhorse, Ford adds 3.2-liter five-cylinder turbo diesel to fuel-efficient North American lineup in all-new Transit commercial van range
  • This innovative engine features state-of-the-art fuel, turbo and emissions systems that meet stringent U.S. clean diesel standards
  • The 3.2-liter Power Stroke® Diesel will deliver outstanding performance, exceptional fuel economy and low operating costs

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 10, 2012 – Ford’s all-new Transit full-size van, which goes on sale late next year, will be offered with a new clean-running 3.2-liter Power Stroke® five-cylinder diesel, further bolstering Ford’s lineup of fuel-efficient cars, trucks and SUVs.

The new diesel, Ford’s second in North America, already has established a proven record for reliability, durability and refinement in the global Ford Ranger truck sold in world markets. The new Power Stroke Diesel will be the only five-cylinder diesel engine available in a commercial van in North America.

“Commercial van drivers spend most of their working hours behind the wheel. We know they want a fuel-efficient diesel engine with smooth, responsive performance and low operating costs,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “The 3.2-liter Power Stroke engine has been developed and proven globally to deliver a world-class combination of power, fuel economy and refinement.”

The 3.2-liter will join the most fuel-efficient lineup
in Ford Motor Company’s history. Next year, Ford
will offer eight vehicles rated at 40 mpg or
higher – double today’s total, and more than any
other automaker. Ford tops Toyota in fuel economy
in every segment in which both companies compete.

While power has not been certified for North America, the new diesel engine is rated in Europe at 197 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque.

Like the larger 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 offered in Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks, the fuel system has been carefully tailored and calibrated for combustion efficiency. It enables the newest Power Stroke to achieve exceptional fuel economy ratings without affecting power levels.

The 3.2-liter turbo diesel features state-of-the-art piezoelectric fuel injectors fed through a high-pressure common rail fuel system, and advanced emissions technologies.

Precise injection timing and calibration also ensures a smooth combustion process to reduce hard diesel combustion clatter, resulting in lower noise levels that are more like a gasoline engine. Each injector nozzle has eight spray holes and can deliver up to five injections per combustion cycle. A pilot injection controls noise levels and a main injection is used for power generation.

Technical features of the new Power Stroke 3.2-liter include:

  • Quick-start glow plugs that enable smooth and fast startups at temperatures down to 25 degrees F
  • Durable, rigid sand-cast gray iron cylinder block
  • Aluminum cylinder heads with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder
  • Advanced common rail piezoelectric fuel injectors that deliver multiple injections per stroke to improve performance and reduce NVH; maximum fuel pressure is 26,100 psi
  • Variable nozzle turbocharger with electronic actuation; maximum impellor speed of 197,800 rpm
  • First application of selective catalytic reduction for reduced nitrogen oxide emissions in a Ford van
  • Integrated diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter to save space
  • Expected to be B20 biodiesel compatible
Additionally, the engine features cast-aluminum, low-friction coated pistons with piston-cooling jets, which squirt oil on the underside of the pistons to keep the piston crowns cool under extreme operating conditions. Also included is a water-cooled high-performance electric-controlled exhaust gas recirculation valve that is better able to withstand coolant pressure drops.

The 3.2-liter Power Stroke is one of several engines that will be available for Transit in North America, including the proven 3.5-liter EcoBoost® gasoline engine. All engines are mated to a Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission.

With a flat torque plateau – 90 percent of its peak torque is available from 1,700 to 3,500 rpm, providing better engine flexibility – Transit will be able to effortlessly haul full loads in town and on the highway, while offering flexible performance across each gear in the six-speed automatic transmission.

“The Power Stroke name is synonymous with power, work and long-term durability,” said Bakaj. “We’re confident our commercial van customers will be extremely pleased with the 3.2-liter’s fuel economy, performance and running costs.”

The Power Stroke 3.2-liter is manufactured in Ford’s Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It will be exported to Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo., which received a $1.1 billion investment for the Transit.

Chrysler's Newest Brand: RAM Commercial

With housing starts at a four-year high, the construction industry poised to replace aging fleets and diesel and gasoline prices on the decline, Ram Truck is ready to introduce its newest vehicle division: Ram Commercial.

Recently announced at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, the new division will offer the Ram Cargo Van, new ProMaster full-size van, Ram 1500, Ram HDs and Ram HD chassis cabs, the latter with gas, turbo-diesel, and compressed-natural-gas powertrains.

Ram Commercial will offer a full line of industrial-strength trucks and vans built for workers and businesses to provide maximum capability and productivity while striving for a low total cost-of-ownership experience, the division says. Ram Commercial also incorporates a full support team that includes sales, marketing, product development and customer service. Finally, Ram Commercial offers exclusive pre-sale and post-sale solutions with BusinessLink and On-the-Job customer programs.

The Ram Commercial division hopes to further integrate a growing network of Ram BusinessLink dealers focused on commercial customers' needs. The division also will help businesses offset the cost of doing business with its On-the-Job incentive program, specifically designed to lower the expense of commercial upfits. Both programs are designed to address the needs of the professional, no matter what the job.

Not coincendentally, timing of the Ram Commercial launch aligns with the upcoming launch of the all-new Ram ProMaster and growing commercial demand for certain construction sectors of the economy. With the entire auto industry growing by 2 million units year-over-year in 2012, and further growth expected in 2013, commercial business will be key, as it represents about one-quarter of the total volume.

Ford and GM have commercial truck divisions that are quite successful. Ford offers the most diverse and capable variety of vehicles, everything from a small four-cylinder cargo van (the Transit Connect) to a medium-duty F-750 cab and chassis. GM does a much better job of offering a lot of its existing small, medium and large pickup trucks (Colorado, Avalanche, Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD) with special Fleet & Commercial packages.
