SLP supercharger available for 2014-2016 GM trucks

 

Street Legal Performance (SLP) announced that it now has supercharger systems available for 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014-2016 GMC Sierra with 5.3 and 6.2-liter engines.
The SLP Supercharger System for 2014-16 GM trucks powered by a 6.2-liter V8 boosts performance of the direct injected high-compression platform to 590 horsepower.

“That’s an additional 170 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm, resulting in a tire-shredding 41 percent horsepower and 28 percent torque increase over stock,” SLP reports.

For 2014-16 GM trucks equipped with 5.3-liter V8, the SLP supercharger provides an additional 165 rear-wheel horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 167 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm, with an end result of 520 horsepower and 550 lb-ft or torque. That equates to a 46 percent gain in horsepower and a 44 percent boost in torque over stock.

SLP’s supercharger systems for 2014-16 Chevrolet and GMC trucks are developed in-house by talented SLP engineers utilizing OEM CAD data to optimize available space for the best possible fitment and maximum performance.

Chevy Supercharger under hoodThe SLP 1900 supercharger system is part of the TVS (Twin Vortices Series) line of superchargers, utilizing Eaton’s TVS technology rotating assembly to deliver more power and better fuel economy in a smaller package. This is the same technology that has been used and proven for years in OEM high-performance applications such as the Cadillac CTS-V and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The positive displacement supercharger features twin four-lobe rotors twisted 160-degrees. By comparison, the original Eaton supercharger rotating assembly featured three lobes twisted 60-degrees.

“The added benefits of this design include vastly cooler discharge temps than competitive twin screw designs, higher volumetric capacity, higher operating speeds, a smoother, more efficient flow of air into the engine, and improved noise and vibration characteristics,” SLP states.

“Instant throttle response and increased power through the engine’s entire power band is to be expected after installing the SLP 1900 TVS supercharger, giving it an instant advantage over the turbocharged competition.”

World-Class Women's Rally Set for October

 

Adventure-loving women have a new competitive event to consider: the inaugural 2016 Rebelle Rally set for Oct. 13-22. The brainchild of veteran off-road racer and trainer Emily Miller, the rally is a seven-day navigation competition that covers 1,000 miles of the southwestern U.S.

Using 4x4s and crossovers, competitors will navigate remote backcountry roads without GPS, cellphone or computer assistance. Maps and a compass are the only aids competitors can use.

The race will have two classes — 4x4s and crossovers — each with their own set of requirements and technical challenges. If you don't own a qualifying vehicle, Jeep Wrangler Rubicons will be available for rent.

Each day of competition will end in a comfortable camp equipped with food, sleeping accommodations and bathroom facilities. The rally will begin in South Lake Tahoe, Nev., and finish in Del Mar, Calif.

We expect the event will field quite a few full-size pickup truck entries; in fact, Ram is providing a 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel and sponsoring the team of Nena Barlow and Kande Jacobsen, two longtime adventure enthusiasts who have been involved in competitive rallies (such as the Gazelle Rally in Morocco) and overlanding for many years.

Industry Awards, Auto Shows Are Around the Corner

 

Believe it or not, we're almost ready to jump into another auto show season, which means the revelation of several automotive awards are close as well.

We consider the annual State Fair of Texas, open to the public Sept. 30-Oct. 23 in Dallas, as the first auto show of the year because it offers big pickup truck displays and new product highlights from each pickup truck maker in the U.S. No one needs to tell Texans that the pickup truck is an important part of life; that's why we've made a point of attending each year for almost two decades. Texans buy more pickups than the residents of any other state in the country, so the fair is a great place for manufacturers to promote their vehicles.

As for automotive awards, the annual North American Car & Truck/Utility of the Year Awards set the bar for industry standards. These awards are determined by a group of 60 U.S. and Canadian automotive writers; sister site Cars.com's Senior Consumer Affairs Editor Kelsey Mays and Executive Editor Joe Wiesenfelder are among the judges.

In the past, restricting the awards to just two categories — Car and Truck/Utility of the Year — created some challenges when it came to which category included SUVs and crossovers. To rectify that for 2017, NACTOY added a third category for SUVs and crossovers; heavy-duty and light-duty pickup trucks, and commercial vans fall into the truck category.

NACTOY announced Wednesday which vehicles are eligible for the 2017 awards. Below we list the SUV of the Year and Truck of the Year competitors. The winners will be announced at the press conference that kicks off the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 9.

Spied: 2017 Ram Power Wagon Tow Testing

 

Our spy shooters caught the 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Laramie during high-altitude tow testing in the Rocky Mountains without its trademark macho graphics package.

Given the size and shape and amount of flex in the dual-wheel box trailer, we'd estimate the load to be about 8,000 or 9,000 pounds, and a good test for the Hemi Power Wagon on the steep, high-altitude Colorado grades.

As you can see, this isn't so much a traditional spy photo gallery, complete with camouflage graphics, as it is about tow testing the 6.4-liter V-8 Hemi to its limits. Shown at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, the brawny Power Wagon is getting a new look that brings it more in line with the light-duty Ram 1500 Rebel. The 2017 Power Wagon will even offer seats imprinted with a tire-tread pattern just like the Rebel.

The 2017 Power Wagon lineup will include a fully loaded Laramie (pictured) as well as a new, less expensive and more basic Tradesman Power Wagon. Expect 2017 Power Wagons to make it to dealerships later this fall.
